Liwa Desert Trip Checklist: 4x4 Kit for the 2026–27 Season
Heading to Liwa for the 2026–27 season? The essential 4x4 kit for sand driving: tyre deflators and compressors, recovery gear, power, lighting and camping, plus a quick checklist.
Liwa is the UAE's big desert trip. Tall dunes on the edge of the Empty Quarter, soft sand, long days far from help. Whether you are heading out for the Liwa International Festival (11 December 2026 – 3 January 2027 in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi) or a weekend in the Moreeb dunes, the right kit decides whether a stuck vehicle is a five-minute job or a long night.
This checklist covers what experienced desert drivers carry, why each item matters, and where to get it in the UAE.
1. Tyre pressure: the most important thing you will do
Letting air out of your tyres is what makes sand driving possible. A softer tyre spreads its footprint and floats on the sand instead of digging in. Most bogged vehicles in Liwa are simply running road pressure.
- Air down before you enter the sand. Many desert drivers run somewhere around 15–18 PSI in soft sand, but the right figure depends on your vehicle, load and tyres, so check your tyre maker's guidance and start conservative.
- Use a proper deflator with a gauge. It takes all four tyres down evenly and quickly, and you know the exact reading.
- Air back up before the tarmac. Driving on the highway at sand pressure overheats tyres and makes the vehicle unstable. A 12V compressor gets you back to road pressure in minutes.

2. Recovery gear: carry it even if you never use it
In Liwa you will get stuck, or you will help someone who is. The basics:
- Recovery boards – the first thing to reach for. Placed under the drive wheels, they give traction to drive out without a second vehicle.
- Snatch strap or kinetic rope – for a vehicle-to-vehicle recovery. Match the rating to your vehicle's weight.
- Rated shackles – steel bow shackles or soft shackles to connect the strap. Never hook a strap over a tow ball.
- Recovery damper – laid over the strap, it absorbs energy if anything lets go.
- Rated recovery points – make sure your vehicle has proper rated points front and rear.
- Shovel and gloves – for clearing sand from the chassis and wheels.
- Winch – worth it if you drive solo or in harder terrain.

3. Power and electrics
- Jump starter – a flat battery in the dunes is common after a night of lights and fridges. A portable jump starter means you don't depend on another car.
- Dual battery or DC-DC charger – keeps your fridge and camp lights running without draining the starting battery.
- Driving and camp lighting – Liwa nights are completely dark. Good driving lights for the tracks, and area lights for camp.

4. Camping and comfort
- Water – more than you think you need. A vehicle water tank keeps it secure and easy to use.
- 12V fridge – keeps food and drinks cold for the whole trip without ice.
- Awning or rooftop tent – shade by day and a quick camp at night.
- Storage – bags and organisers stop gear flying around on the dunes.

5. Safety rules for Liwa
- Never go alone. Travel in a convoy of at least two vehicles.
- Tell someone your route and your expected return time.
- Carry extra fuel and water, a first-aid kit and a charged phone.
- Check the tyre pressure, fluids and battery before you leave.
- Stay clear of dune crests you can't see over, and keep a safe distance from the car in front.
